Reflection BLOG # 11

During outside play B1 sat in the sand pit with B2, making sandcastles and small hills with sand.  They had been playing outside for two hours and it was time to go indoors for circle free play time. The teacher had instructed B1 in a kind manner that it was time to finish playing, dust off the sand, walk up to the door and sit on the mat.  B1 heard the teacher, looked towards her and gave her a blank stare then continued on with his game.  The teacher then repeated her instruction, this time B1 gave out a cry and buried his head in his hands. G1 then stood up, took hold of his hand and said, ‘Come on B1, you have to go up’.  B1 then lifted his head, sniffled and stopped crying.  He stood up and allowed G1 to lead him up to the mat.  The teacher thanked G1 for her help.  G1 gave a smile then ran off to play.  B1 seemed to be happy to go inside and sat down with the other children. G1 console B1 when he is crying and that make him feel better. G1 let him know that I am here for you. It made him happy. G1 express of empathy toward B1.

  1. I'm glad B1 listened the second time around and didn't create a big scence. I think it's good that G1 went over to convince him to get up, sometimes i feel children will not listen to their authority figures but if they see their peers doing the same thing in listening, then they will follow along. Also, it's good that G1 was there to console him and make him feel better by giving him a hand.

  2. I'm glad that G1 stepped in at assisted the teacher in getting B1 to understand it was time to go inside and expressed empathy towards him. It's a good thing that the teacher didn't intervene again when she saw G1 talking to B1. It's good that he was able to get his emotions together and come inside once another child came to console him. Sometimes the words of another friend goes along way.

  3. This really shows that the boy was very engaged in his activity and even though he had two hours to working in the sand area, this just wasn't enough time for him to complete his vision. It is important to keep to the class schedule, but the teach could maybe try giving him more of a warning leading up to the time to go inside. There are sand hour glasses that only have a few minutes in it. Some have 15min, 10min, 5min, 3min, etc. This would give the boy a better sense of how long he has to complete his project. It wont be such a sudden transition.
